Withdraw Crypto to a Canadian Bank 2026: Interac, EFT, Wire

How to cash out crypto to a Canadian bank: Interac e-Transfer caps from C$3,000 to C$10,000, EFT and wire fees, CAD conversion costs, FINTRAC and CRA rules.

Close-up of a Canadian twenty-dollar banknote

Canadian banks do not accept crypto deposits, so every cash-out runs through a platform that sells the coins for Canadian dollars and pays them out by Interac e-Transfer, EFT or wire. On the seven platforms we checked in November 2026, the payout itself costs between C$0 and C$10 per e-Transfer. The larger cost sits in the sale, where published trading fees and spreads run from 0.20% to 1.85%. Transfer limits decide which rail fits. e-Transfers stop at C$3,000 to C$10,000 per withdrawal, and larger sums move by EFT or wire.

How to withdraw crypto to a Canadian bank account

A cash-out has three legs: the sale of the coins, the CAD payout from the platform and the credit at your bank. Each leg has its own fee and its own limit. The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) keep a list of crypto asset trading platforms that are registered or operate under a pre-registration undertaking, and the Ontario Securities Commission publishes a separate list for Ontario residents. The platforms in this guide appear on those lists.

The sequence below applies to Kraken, Newton, NDAX, Bitbuy, Wealthsimple, Shakepay and Coinbase.

  1. Move the coins from your own wallet to a platform account verified in your full legal name.
  2. Sell into a CAD pair. A BTC/CAD order settles in one trade, while a BTC/USD sale adds a second currency conversion.
  3. Check withdrawal holds. Bitbuy restricts withdrawals for 72 hours after the first e-Transfer deposit, and Coinbase requires one CAD deposit by e-Transfer before the first cash-out.
  4. Choose the rail by amount, using the comparison in the next section.
  5. Accept the payment at the bank. Kraken and Bitbuy send e-Transfers through Payper Inc., and with Autodeposit enabled the funds land without a security answer.
  6. Save the trade confirmation and the withdrawal record for your tax return.

Interac e-Transfer vs EFT vs wire transfer for crypto withdrawals

The three rails differ in cost structure more than in speed. The table summarizes published platform terms as of November 2026.

Interac e-Transfer

The platform cap binds before the bank cap. Manulife Bank and BlueShore Financial accept incoming e-Transfers up to C$25,000 per transaction and charge nothing to receive them, while platform limits stop at C$10,000. The name on your bank's e-Transfer profile has to match the name on the platform account. Kraken and Coinbase both require the names to match, and Kraken names a mismatch as the usual reason a bank asks to authorize a transfer.

EFT

Flat and percentage fees diverge fast as the amount grows. On a C$50,000 withdrawal, NDAX charges C$4.99, Kraken charges C$175 at 0.35%, and Bitbuy charges C$750 at 1.5%. Newton and Wealthsimple charge nothing for EFT. NDAX processes EFT batches twice per business day, at 8:00 and 16:00 Eastern time.

Wire transfer

Wires carry fees at both ends. Kraken charges C$13 for a SWIFT withdrawal with a C$100 minimum, Newton charges nothing from C$10,000, and Bitbuy takes 1.5%. On the receiving side, RBC charges a fee on incoming wires above C$50, and WealthNorth's 2026 fee tables list C$15 to C$17.50 per incoming wire at the Big Five banks.

Kraken raised its entry-tier Kraken Pro rates in July 2026, from 0.25% maker and 0.40% taker to 0.40% and 0.80%. Wealthsimple moved all clients to its current crypto pricing on 24 September 2026.

Applied to a C$1,000 Bitcoin sale withdrawn to a bank, the published rates produce these results. Unpublished spreads and the network fee for depositing the coins are excluded.

Converting crypto to CAD: where the cost sits

The fee line on a withdrawal screen is the smaller number. What decides the result is the price you sell at.

Platforms that advertise zero commission earn on the spread instead, the gap between the quoted price and the market price. Bitbuy discloses a 0.5% to 1.85% range. Wealthsimple publishes no spread figure and shows the final price before you confirm, and its limit and stop orders carry no spread at all. That detail matters more than it looks. A market sell on a thin pair late on a Sunday and a limit sell during North American hours are two different trades, even on the same coin.

Stablecoins add a Canadian twist. USDT has been absent from CSA-registered platforms since 2023, when Crypto.com removed it on 31 January and Coinbase on 31 August under the pre-registration undertakings. USDC stayed. Someone holding USDT in a self-custody wallet first swaps it into USDC or Bitcoin elsewhere, and the CRA treats that swap as a disposition in its own right. Two trades, two spreads, one more line in the tax file.

The USD route works the same way. Selling for US dollars and converting at the bank stacks the platform spread on top of the bank's exchange margin, and the second cost appears on no crypto fee page.

Bank reviews, FINTRAC reporting and CRA tax on crypto cash-outs

Each cash-out also passes three filters: the receiving bank, the platform's reporting obligations and the tax return.

How Canadian banks treat exchange payouts

Canadian banks and crypto have a long, uneasy history. In April 2013 RBC closed the accounts of the exchanges VirtEx and Canadian Bitcoins, CIBC held C$28 million of QuadrigaCX funds from January 2018, and TD stopped crypto purchases on its credit cards in February 2018. Inbound payouts face lighter friction now. Kraken's support pages state that a bank sometimes holds an e-Transfer for authorization, and the fix is a call to the bank's e-Transfer team, not the branch. Coinbase's help page attributes delayed Interac payments to blocks placed by Interac or by the bank.

FINTRAC reporting and the Travel Rule

Platforms registered with FINTRAC as money services businesses file a Large Virtual Currency Transaction Report when they receive virtual currency worth C$10,000 or more in one transaction. Under the 24-hour rule, smaller receipts that total C$10,000 within 24 hours are aggregated into one report. Transfers of C$1,000 or more also trigger Travel Rule records. NDAX, for one, blocks crypto deposits and withdrawals above C$1,000 until the sender and recipient details are complete. These are platform duties, and the user sees them as extra forms.

CRA tax on the sale

The CRA treats crypto as a commodity, so the sale for CAD is a disposition. A gain on capital account is taxed at a 50% inclusion rate after the government cancelled the proposed two-thirds rate on 21 March 2025. Frequent, short-term trading is taxed as business income at 100%. Withdrawing the CAD and moving coins between your own wallets are not taxable events.

The CRA's visibility is growing. Canada applies the OECD Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework from 1 January 2026, and platforms file the first annual client reports in 2027. Before that, the Federal Court ordered Coinsquare in March 2021 to hand over data on accounts holding C$20,000 or more, and Dapper Labs on 2,500 users in 2025.

Common mistakes and risks when cashing out crypto in Canada

Each item below comes from a platform notice, a regulator action or an incident log.

  • Name mismatch. An e-Transfer profile under a nickname or a former surname could stop the payout until the bank releases it.
  • Unregistered offshore platforms. FINTRAC fined Binance C$6,002,000 in May 2024 for operating without foreign MSB registration. Funds held on such a platform could become hard to withdraw to a Canadian bank, with no Canadian regulator to complain to.
  • Peer-to-peer buyers. A stranger who pays by e-Transfer from a compromised account leaves you with money the bank could freeze during a fraud review.
  • Percentage fees on large sums. A C$100,000 EFT withdrawal at 1.5% costs C$1,500, while the same amount by NDAX EFT costs C$4.99.
  • Outages. Coinbase reported delayed Interac withdrawals for Canadian users on 25 October 2026 and linked them to an Interac issue. Shakepay logged a 7-minute e-Transfer incident on 18 January 2026.
  • Fake support numbers. Search results for Coinbase withdrawals in Canada in November 2026 included spam pages on Goodreads that posted a fake support phone line.
  • Missing records. The adjusted cost base needs every purchase, swap and fee. Without them, the gain is hard to support in a CRA review.

Questions people ask

Can I send Bitcoin straight to my TD, RBC or BMO account?
No. Canadian bank accounts hold fiat currency only, so the coins have to be sold for CAD on a crypto platform before any money reaches the bank.
Is the CAD withdrawal itself taxable?
No. The tax event is the sale of the crypto, which goes on your T1 return for that calendar year. The filing deadline for individuals is April 30 of the following year.
Why does my e-Transfer from Kraken or Bitbuy come from Payper Inc.?
Payper Inc. processes Interac payments for both platforms, so the Interac notice names the processor instead of the exchange.
What is the largest single CAD withdrawal on a Canadian platform?
Newton accepts wire withdrawals up to C$1,000,000 per transaction with a C$10,000 minimum. Bitbuy caps direct bank deposits at C$100,000.
Can I cash out USDT in Canada?
Not on CSA-registered platforms, which removed USDT in 2023 under the pre-registration undertakings. USDC remains listed on Coinbase and other registered platforms.
