Gate Review: Fees, Security, Licenses and User Reviews

Our Gate (Gate.io) review for Canadian readers: fees after the April 2026 update, proof of reserves, past hacks, licenses by country and user reviews.

Gate exchange homepage showing cryptocurrencies and market prices

Gate is a centralized exchange founded in 2013 as Bter.com and renamed from Gate.io to Gate in May 2025. We reviewed its fees, reserves, incident record, licenses and user ratings with data current to 4 November 2026. The main platform restricts Canadian residents, and we flag this in each section where it matters.

3.6/5

3.6

Wide but restricted

Our verdict

Gate lists one of the largest asset catalogs in the industry and publishes monthly proof of reserves above 115%. The undisclosed 2018 hack, the July 2026 theft dispute and weak support scores pull the rating down. Canadian residents are restricted under the user agreement.

Fees with a $1,000 example

Gate changed its fee schedule on 9 April 2026. Public trackers disagree on the new VIP 0 spot rate. Comparedge (8 July 2026) lists 0.20% maker and 0.20% taker. Other trackers list 0.10% for both. We show both rates below.

Spot, high estimate0.20%0.20%Comparedge
Perpetual futures0.015%0.05%Gate

A $1,000 market buy of BTC on spot costs $1.00 at 0.10% or $2.00 at 0.20%. A round trip (buy and sell) costs $2.00 or $4.00. A $1,000 notional futures position opened and closed with taker orders costs $1.00 in trading fees, before funding. The same trade with maker orders costs $0.30.

Withdrawal fees vary by network. Gate's public API gives USDT minimums of 10 USDT on TRC20 and 1 USDT on BEP20 and ERC20 (Teamorouter, 3 November 2026), without the fee itself. Gate shows the withdrawal fee only on the withdrawal screen.

Security, reserves and incidents

Gate keeps user funds in custodial wallets controlled by the exchange. It publishes proof of reserves with a Merkle tree and zk-SNARK proofs for close to 500 assets. CoinMarketCap ranked Gate fourth by reserves in January 2026.

Source: Gate Proof of Reserves page. User net assets stood at $7.332B on 18 October 2026. A reserve ratio covers assets against liabilities on the snapshot date. It does not show off-chain liabilities or the state of funds between snapshots.

The incident record weighs against the reserve data. We list the cases in date order:

  • April 2018. Attackers took 7,170 BTC, worth $230M to $234M at the time, from Bter cold wallets. Analysts attribute the attack to North Korean groups. Gate did not inform users. ZachXBT made the loss public in November 2022, and the attacker moved $3.2M of the funds in February 2023.
  • 2023, Chile. LiveBitcoinNews reports that Gate did not comply with four Chilean court orders to return 379.2 BNB stolen in a hack. Apple later removed the Gate app from the Chilean App Store. We did not find a public response from Gate on the court orders.
  • December 2024. Hack rumors circulated on social media. Gate denied a breach.
  • July 2026. A user alleged that $1.7M was stolen from their account. Gate first dismissed the claim, then apologized and reopened the case. It reported no internal breach and said it was working with a third party to freeze the assets and compensate the user. Net outflows reached $207M over the following 7 days.

Licenses and availability by country

The group operates through regional entities. Each license covers its own entity and not the global gate.com platform.

Section 2.5 of the user agreement (updated 15 April 2026) lists restricted locations for the global platform. The list includes:

  • Canada and the United States
  • mainland China and Hong Kong
  • the UK, France, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands
  • Singapore, Malaysia, India, Japan and South Korea

EU residents are routed to the Maltese entity. For Canada, Gate holds no registration with the Canadian Securities Administrators. The Ontario Securities Commission issued an investor alert on 17 August 2023 naming "Gate EX" (IOSCO I-SCAN ID 25998). The alert's link to the Gate group is unconfirmed. Canadian readers who use Gate through a VPN or a foreign address breach the user agreement and risk an account freeze.

Products

Gate covers the main product categories of an offshore exchange:

  • spot trading in 4,200+ assets
  • perpetual futures with leverage up to 125x
  • margin and options
  • Launchpad and Startup token sales tied to the GT token
  • tokenized stocks and TradFi instruments
  • prediction markets
  • GUSD, a yield product at 3.8% per year (rate as of November 2026)
  • Gate Wallet, a self-custody wallet
  • Gate Ventures, the group's investment arm

The yield on GUSD and Earn products comes from the exchange's own operations. It carries counterparty risk and is not deposit insurance.

User experience in numbers

User ratings split by profile and platform. We collected the figures below.

PlatformRatingReviewsDate
Trustpilot (gate.io)1.3 / 51,389September 2026
Trustpilot (gate.com)3.7 / 5121November 2026
Reviews.io1.4 / 52162026
G24.4 / 52262026

Securities.io (April 2026) counted 78% of gate.io Trustpilot reviews at one star. Analysts flagged the G2 score as possibly manipulated. The gate.com profile shows replies to 87% of negative reviews, usually within 24 hours.

The negative reviews repeat four themes:

  • account freezes during compliance checks
  • delayed withdrawals
  • repeated KYC requests after deposit
  • slow responses from support

One Trustpilot reviewer described Spot and TradFi accounts frozen for 19 days with $1,233 locked. We did not verify individual cases. The volume of similar reports is the signal we used for the support score.

Who Gate suits and who should look elsewhere

Gate fits traders outside restricted jurisdictions who need:

  • access to small-cap and newly listed tokens
  • low futures fees
  • an exchange that publishes regular proof of reserves

Readers who should look elsewhere include:

  • Canadian residents, since the platform restricts them
  • users who need responsive support and predictable withdrawals
  • users who weigh the handling of past incidents as heavily as current reserves

Canadian readers have registered alternatives listed with the CSA. We do not give investment advice, and this review is not a recommendation to open an account.
